All Aboard! Departures from Platform 3, Aviemore Railway Station

The Strathspey Railway invites you to travel back in time as you journey through the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. The Park boasts a spectacular catalogue of nature, culture and heritage which includes Britain's highest mountain range, its biggest and best ancient forests, wildlife such as red squirrels, reindeer and ospreys, and so much more!  What better way to explore this magnificent locale than on board one of our vintage trains.

Aviemore developed as a small village after the Inverness & Perth Junction Railway (from 1865 the Highland Railway) opened in 1863. During the next few years a handful of houses, primarily for railway staff, a post office and a general store were built. The period of development saw the station became the main junction between the new route to Inverness and the old route via Boat of Garten. Aviemore’s role as a main line junction ceased with the closure of the route to Forres in 1965. Today the railway operates from the beautifully restored Victorian Station located in the centre of the village.

Remember that we have plenty of fantastic gifts, sweet treats and refreshments available in our Aviemore Shop - be sure to pay us a visit before and after your trip !

Select 'Dining On Board' above if you wish to make your trip on board extra special with one of our exclusive Dining Experiences!

All Aboard! Departures from Boat of Garten Railway Station

Boat of Garten exists due to the opening of the railway in 1863 and was at one time the meeting and exchange  point of the ‘Highland’ and ‘Great North of Scotland’ railways. As the train arrives from Aviemore, notice the golf course designed by five time Open Championship winner and renowned course architect James Braid on the right  -  one of Scotland's finest courses. For more on James Braid click here. Boat is popularly known as the ‘Osprey Village’. After a near half century absence from Scotland, a pair of Ospreys’ returned in the 1950’s to nest at Loch Garten which is approximately 3 miles from the village.

Break your journey at Boat by visiting the Community Garden adjoining the station; this was designed in conjunction with the popular BBC series “The Beechgrove Garden”. There is a new art gallery and several places to sit out and enjoy light refreshments, you can explore the well signposted woodland and riverside paths or visit the Milton Loch hide to watch the herons and other wildlife. Beyond Boat the ‘strath’ widens out to give fine views of the Spey. Halfway to Broomhill notice the embankment curving away to the right. This carried the Great North of Scotland line to Craigellachie via Nethy Bridge and Grantown East Station.

Our Station shop has some fantastic gifts, treats and refreshments - be sure to also stop off at our Aviemore and Broomhill shops for more!

Our exclusive 'Dining On Board' experiences can only be arranged for Aviemore departures. If you still wish to board at Boat of Garten, you are most welcome to our on board bar where you can purchase some delicious meals, snacks and refreshments to take back to your seats!

All Aboard! Services from Broomhill Station

Broomhill station served nearby villages of Dulnain Bridge and Nethy Bridge (the later having its own station on the GNSR line) and handled much of the timber traffic, sourced from the surrounding forests; replacing the previous method of floating logs down the Spey. Broomhill featured in the hugely popular BBC series ‘Monarch of the Glen’, in which it became ‘Glenbogle Station’. Actor Hamish Clark, who played ’Duncan’ in the TV series reopened the station in 2002. More recently the station featured in the opening sequence of Danny MacAskill’s new film “Wee Day Out”. The old Grantown railway bridge also makes an appearance.

The building you see today was built to the design of the original which was demolished when the line closed in 1965. The picturesque village of Nethy Bridge is about a mile and a half from the station. There is a way-marked route along the river Nethy, thereby avoiding the public road. The ‘Explore Abernethy’ centre is well worth a visit and there are shops and a hotel. There are also several popular way-marked walks around Nethy. The former GNSR station building can also be seen on Station Road.

Our exclusive 'Dining On Board' experiences can't be arranged for visitors boarding at Broomhill, unfortunately. But you are more than welcome to visit our on board bar for some delicious meals, snacks and refreshments to take back to your seats!
