Watch out for ‘Graham the Gruesome Guard’ during your trip!!
On Halloween night 1962, as the railway was battered mercilessly by a freakish blizzard, a popular Highland Line train guard named Graham mysteriously disappeared from Broomhill Cottage. After years of searching, Graham’s body has never been recovered.
The final report suggested Graham perished in the blizzard and that the unforgiving elements dragged his lifeless body to its final resting place deep in the River Spey.
However those closest to Graham recall he grew increasingly ‘deranged’ as the age of steam drew to a close and was pushed over the edge by plans to close large sections of the Highland Line that he loved. They say he planned to retreat into the shadows of the vast Spey Valley in order to plot revenge on those he blamed.
It has passed into local folklore that Graham’s spirit appears from the deepest, darkest corners of Strathspey Railway each year around Halloween time, and can be seen at Broomhill Station. He has become known locally as ‘Graham the Gruesome Guard’.
.... and if that doesnae fleg the bairns, nothing will!! Strathspey Bears are available to buy in our shops if comfort is required.
